Some of the best days we have had on the road were never planned. A wrong turn onto a quiet main street. A family diner someone mentioned in passing. A conversation with a local that changed the whole direction of the afternoon. Those are the moments that made us fall for the American South.

We have lived, worked and travelled extensively across the United States, covering more than thirty states by road and rail. We have seen the big cities and the famous sights, but we kept finding ourselves drawn back to the South. Not for the headline attractions, but for the places in between.

The quiet main streets. The family owned diners, the local music venues, the historic inns. The roadside attractions that make you pull over, and the small towns and rural communities that rarely appear in a travel guide but so often become the most memorable part of a trip.

We have stayed everywhere from historic hotels and boutique inns to houseboats and independent guesthouses. We have spent time in local wineries, breweries and distilleries, searched out great food, wandered antique stores, walked historic sites and followed scenic roads simply to see where they lead.

For us, travel has never been about ticking off attractions. It is about understanding a place through its people, its food, its history and its landscape.
