FAQS
Everything you need to know about planning and travelling a Secret South road trip. If your question is not here, just ask.
About Our Itineraries
Each itinerary is a professionally planned self-drive journey featuring suggested daily stops, accommodation recommendations, attractions, scenic drives, restaurants and local experiences. You travel independently, following the itinerary at your own pace.
No. Our itineraries are designed for independent travellers who prefer the freedom of exploring on their own while benefiting from a carefully researched route.
Yes. Every itinerary is tailored to your preferences and is reviewed with you before it's finalised. We'll refine the route, accommodation, pace and experiences until you're happy, with no itinerary confirmed until you give your final approval.
Yes. They're designed for both first-time and returning visitors, with practical planning advice and realistic daily driving distances.
Our itineraries are built around the character of the American South, historic towns, local food, scenic backroads and independently owned places to stay, rather than rushing between major tourist attractions. The emphasis is on discovering places many travellers drive straight past.
Booking & Planning
No. We don't make bookings or process payments. Every itinerary includes recommended accommodation and experiences, together with information on where and how to book them directly.
No. Accommodation, flights, car hire, meals, attraction entry fees and travel insurance are booked and paid for separately.
The earlier the better, especially for spring and autumn. A few months of lead time gives the best choice of inns and the smoothest planning.
Yes, particularly during spring, autumn, festivals, public holidays and college football weekends when accommodation in smaller towns can book out well in advance.
No. Our recommendations are never influenced by paid placements or commissions. Every accommodation, restaurant and experience is selected to suit your travel style and the journey we've designed for you. We also recommend places we've experienced ourselves or that come highly recommended by trusted local sources. Often, where you stay becomes an important part of the experience, not just a place to spend the night.
Driving & Transport
Most driving days range between one and three hours, allowing plenty of time to explore towns, attractions and local experiences rather than simply travelling from place to place. Our trips are designed to be relaxing an enjoyable not just getting from A to B.
No. Our itineraries are designed for independent travellers who enjoy the freedom of exploring at their own pace. We guide you through the planning process, create a personalised journey and provide all the information you need before you leave. Once you're on the road, you're free to travel at your own pace, make spontaneous detours or simply enjoy the journey however you choose.
No. All of our itineraries are designed to be completed in a standard passenger vehicle unless otherwise stated. Routes follow sealed roads and established highways that are suitable for conventional rental cars and approved under standard car hire agreements. Occasionally, we may suggest an optional scenic detour along an unsealed road, but these will always be clearly identified so you can decide whether to include them.
Yes. Because every itinerary is customised, you can start and finish your journey in the cities that best suit your travel plans. Whether you're flying into Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Charleston or another destination, we'll design your itinerary around your preferred arrival and departure points.
Accessibility & Travel Style
Yes. Our itineraries are designed to suit a wide range of fitness levels and travel styles. Most experiences focus on attractions that require only light walking. More active experiences, such as hiking, kayaking or cycling, are included as optional suggestions where available. You're free to choose the activities that suit your interests, comfort level and pace of travel.
Yes. If you have accessibility or mobility requirements, or you're travelling with a service animal, please get in touch before booking. Accessibility and service animal policies vary between accommodation providers, attractions and historic properties, but we're happy to make enquiries on your behalf and help you choose an itinerary and experiences that best suit your needs.
Many accommodation providers in the United States welcome pets, but policies vary between properties. If you're travelling with a pet, let us know before booking and we'll recommend accommodation and experiences that are pet-friendly wherever possible. We recommend confirming pet policies directly with each provider before making your reservation.
Your Travel Portal
Your complete itinerary is stored securely in your personal travel portal, making it easy to access from your phone, tablet or computer wherever you are. Your route maps, daily itinerary, accommodation details, confirmations and other travel documents are all kept together in one place. You can also add your own booking confirmations, notes and reminders at any time, giving you a single, organised hub for your entire journey.
Your itinerary is yours to keep. As a member of The Secret South, you'll have ongoing access to your personal travel portal, where your itineraries and travel documents are securely stored. You can return at any time to view past journeys, add new itineraries, or expand existing ones with additional destinations, experiences and recommendations as your travel plans evolve.
